The River Walk, starting from the car park near Avondale House and including some steep descents and climbs, is the longest and hardest of the walks at Avondale. It passes a variety of tree species, goes along beside the river, under the Dublin to Rosslare railway line and past the deer pen and there is also an option to detour into Lover's Leap. There are magnificent river views.

A great walk to enjoy all different species of trees including maple, beech, oak, Douglas and Silver fir, pines, cedars and larches. It is the hardest trail of Avondale with steep desecnts and climbs so strong footwear is recommened.

Trail sign from notice board for clockwise direction. Couldn’t locate anti-clockwise! Fabulous walk, it was just after storm Ellen and thankfully not many trees down. Amazing Forest with huge towering trees. Short and sweet. If you’re in the area worth a try!

Note from Sport Ireland Outdoors:
The River Walk is waymarked in one direction only (anti-clockwise) with white markers. The first marker is when you leave the car park from the map board and points you right.

Drove down from Dublin and arrived on a sunny midweek day to do the River Walk with our dog. We walked down the ride from the car park to the cairn and then joined the trail. With our tree identifying book we had a leisurely stroll along by the river with plenty of leaf cover when the rain came. It cleared in 15 minutes and we resumed a restful, noise free, peaceful walk with just the sound of the running river. Steep ascent at the end to a picnic table and outdoor picnic. My friend and I did the tour of the house, very informative guy on reception, while my husband did another trail with the dog. Most enjoyable day and major bonus points for the free, clean toilets. The €5 entry was well worth the day.

Excellent walk, went from the carpark at the CS Parnell statue at the end of the upper street of Rathdrum. Walked down to Avondale, through there on to one of the tree walks and down on to the river walk.
