Lough Boora-Durrow Castle – Programme Two

Liz Mc Manus

"Liz Mc Manus explores Lough Boora, County Offaly and Durrow Castle, County Laois"

Lough Boora is situated in Parklands in the Midlands between Birr and Tullamore, 2 hours from both Galway and Dublin. It was where author and retired politian Liz Mc Manus started the first of two walks. The commercial harvesting of turf began here in the mid 20th century. Today, the cutaway bog is entering a new phase of life containing 50 km of walking paths laid out in looping routes. Liz was joined by parklands manager Tom Egan to get a first flavour of the strange and wonderful landscape and met geologist John Feehan who sheds some light on the mystery of the ancient missing lake.

For the second part of her walk Liz Mc Manus tackled a challenging route of river walks and forests in Durrow, Co. Laois. The trail head began near the gates of Durrow Castle and meandered in a loop around the town taking in the highest vantage point in the area, the Ballagh. During her walk on this leafy loop Liz hiked a woodland path that looped around to the River Nore where local historian Sean Conroy accompanied her to the top of the Ballagh. The views from here in all directions are stunning and this walk was approximately 16km long.
