This is a fabulous mostly off-road walk traversing the old famine green road high around Black Head, climbing to the top of the pass between Cappanawalla and Gleninagh Mountain, including some minor road and finishing through a hazel wood. Views over the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, Connemara and the hills of the Burren are spectacular.

Having already done the Black Head and Caher Valley Loops, this trail had been on my list for a long time. Last Saturday I took the 350 bus from Galway and got off at Murrough Bridge just before Fanore beach. The trail follows the Black Head loop most of the way until splitting off after passing through Gleninagh valley. The highlights for me are always the views of the N67 whilst rounding Black Head and walking alongside Cappanawalla. Following very quiet roads back to Ballyvaughan, I passed sections of the Burren Way that I had completed before as if meeting a past version of myself. For someone with Clare heritage I always feel I'm coming home and walking in the footsteps of my ancestors when around the Burren and so I didn't mind walking the bohreens back to Ballyvaughan with time to spare to catch the 350 bus back home. It took me a little under 5hrs to complete which included taking some breaks. I'm giving this trail 4 stars to distinguish it from the Black Head Loop which is a 5 star trail; but it is one of the best linear trails in the country.

I walked this trail in July 2014. It is a very enjoyable and varied trek, taking in great coastal views, a close-up look at the classic limestone pavement of the Burren, a green valley and woodland. The route is well marked and although it is quite isolated it is not difficult for anyone used to hiking. I stayed in Ballyvaughan (a very nice base) and took the bus to the Fanore caravan park to pick up the trail back. As Bus Eireann route 350 links both places this is a very practical option. Overall a great addition to the walking options in this part of Clare.
