Trail Development: Trail Development Guide

The National Trails Advisory Committee (NTAC) and the Irish Sports Council (ISC) seek to ensure all waymarked walking routes are developed and maintained to appropriate standards. To this end, the National Trails Office have a guide to "Planning & Developing Waymarked Walking Trails in Ireland".

This guide is intended to provide some general information and guidance to any individual, agency, local development group or organisation interested in developing a waymarked walking trail in Ireland. It sets out some of the basic issues that should be considered as part of any walking trail development project and also outlines the approach recommended by the NTAC. This document summarises a number of important issues any development group should be aware of at the start of a project and many of these issues will be examined in far greater detail throughout the development process. This guide places many of the issues “on the table” and this in turn, ensures informed decision-making can take place.

In addition to this guide, the National Trails Office can assist and advise in all aspects of trail development and management, and can recommend a number of experienced advisors who can assist and advise in all areas of trail development.
