The actual distance of the full trail is closer to 75km. It has a bit of everything - beautiful views, rocky sections, wooded sections, open hillsides, high passes, roads and boggy sections. It is very well signposted and easy to follow but a map would also be a good idea.

I ran it as part of the Sli Galetacht Mhuscrai Ultra-marathon. The weather was poor and it made the terrain difficult. In better weather with drier underfoot conditions, it would have been great.

For hikers, you would have some good options of B&Bs or hotels along the way and in some of the bigger villages and towns the trail goes through (Ballyvourney for example) and could be done in 3 days.

Would recommend if you have the time to do it. Some of the hill climbs are steep and boggy but the views are worth the effort. Millstreet is a welcome sight at the end!

Walked from Ballyvourney to Millstreet on 13 October 2021. Start of route is changed because of work on Macroom bypass. Watch out for a good sign with info at start of route, near Beara Breifne board. Route not well marked on road and we felt unsure of where we were going for a while. Thanks to kind people who helped us. We followed some red arrows along the way that seemed to point the right way but were confusing. Part of the route through a forest shown in the map, is no longer there. Once we found the road through the wind turbine 'farms' waymarking was excellent from there on.

Having done the whole trail in 2 parts it is a really well marked route. It is however 72km in length not 50km.

NOTE FROM SPORT IRELAND OUTDOORS: Thank you for pointing out the discrepancy in the length of the trail on this website. We have corrected it .

Walked part of the route from Kealkill to Gougane Barra and back recently. Road sections are a little boring but the off road trails are excellent. Really well way-marked, which during heavy fog on the hilly sections was very useful. Great day out. Consider driving out of Kealkill as the first few miles are all on road and you can park before the start of the first off-road section.

Did a recce of Kealkill-Gougane Barra, but in reverse. Extremely well marked. No issue whatsoever. On arriving at Kealkill, checked out the Castle on river bank, and invited in for tea, biscuits and a 2 hour chat about the local area.. Great morning out..
